This student generated his own algorithm for calculating surface area and used the model to help him. it would be interesting to ask this student what he notices in his number sentence of 8+8+8+8+4+4. why is 8 being added 4 times? this might get him to see how the four faces of his rectangular prism of the volume 16 cubes are congruent and hence have the same surface area.
