While the grade twos didn't use a formula for surface area, a few of them did demonstrate an understanding of factors and created a 9 by 4 array. From there, they went on to doubling sides that had the same dimensions and finally adding up everything. Another student made a generalization that the more cubes you connect the more units you lose.
